You don't need to empty the tank to change the fuel filter.

I would suggest you look into replacing the brake lines.

Have you checked the valve clearances?

Gas tank won't have to be emptied - it feeds fuel via vacuum pressure. Leave the peacock switched to "on" or "res" and you might get a drop or two that spill out, but no actual flow. (Warning-If you move the petcock to "prime" fuel will flow freely.)

I'd also recommend checking inside the tank for rust. Maybe check carb synchronization?
+1 to the brake lines and oil/filter suggestions.

Stock air filter works best, but I think I've seen people using those ones fine. Quick search for the brand name on here should answer your question.

If they're rubber, hell yes change them. Mileage has nothing to do with degradation of rubber, thats time and exposure.

Check the manual for areas that are also due for maintenance.

OEM brake lines are supposed to be changed every 5 years.

Give G&J Aircraft Brake lines a call. Nice stuff and lots cheaper than the ones marketed for motorcycles.

Got three lines from them for like $75, should last a lifetime as opposed to flimsy rubber lines.
