So when I took off my regulator, I didn't notice that one of the screws holding it in place was coated black. I'm not 100%, but there's a chance that it's coated to prevent it from grounding that part of the regulator.
If anyone has a pre 750 alternator laying around, I would REALLY appreciate it if you could just take off the cover and tell me which of the three screws is the black one, because I don't remember which hole it goes in.
If the alternator's off the bike, you're looking at three 8mm nuts to pull off the cover, so it's not a big job or anything.
