    Does this plastic piece on top of the alternator come off? I'm assuming it's a rectifier, given that it runs directly to the battery.

    Don't want to just pull it off and break it, but it is loose.

    It looks to be soldered in. If you need it off to replace, unsolder it and see what happens.

        That looks to be the rectifier, AC to DC.. if thats bad replace the alternator.

          I've figured out that it is indeed the rectifier. For anyone who is curious, the wires going into the alternator are the wires that form the stator coils and cannot be pulled out, to remove the assembly it must be desoldered.

          There are 6 diodes that make up the rectifier which can be tested with the alternator cover off and the rectifier still attached.

            also had my alt apart today, was wondering what to do there. ( don't like to throw away parts that don't get made anymore)
