...I don't know about you, but I'm lying on my back when I put the oil drain bolt back in by hand to start it threading in -- I just stay there until I'm done. I've also marked the back of the tool at 16.5 lb-ft so I could see it from the other side, but haven't used it that way.

Hmmm, never did it that way. I just reach under and screw the drain plug back in. But marking the back of the scale would work fine.

...If you rapidly tighten the bolt until the wrench clicks you will over torque it.

The other common mistake is not torquing something down in 1 continuous movement. If you stop before the wrench clicks you will find that when you go back to tighten it you have to overcome the initial friction to get the fastener moving again - and almost always the torque wrench will click before the fastener ever turns - and you end up under torqued. In that case you need to back it off and retorque it again.
