dropping a new transmission

Ok so third gear is being a wonky and doesnt engage...Im putting a new transmission in but I want to know if there is a way to do it without taking the engine out and removing the crankcase. Can i come in from the side with it or anything or do i have to take the whole engine apart? if there are any tips/tricks to do it easier let me know...

Ya have to split the case... there are guide pins that hold the shafts from moving without the case split.
