  • when removing engine covers....

I am getting ready to paint all three engine covers, other than having to replace the gaskets, is there anything else I need to know? Should I be draining the oil first? and If I need to drain the oil, can I reuse it (the oil was changed less than 100 miles ago)

You will definitely get oil from the clutch cover.

The ignition cover may dribble a little.

Not sure about the starter cover for sure.

Oil is cheap enough that I'd just replace it.

drain the oil for sure! if not, expect a mess on the floor...im speaking from experience with Tim not wanting to drain the oil out of the bad engine first ;D
It doesn't matter what you ride, as long as you ride.

If memory serves me, there is 1 or 2 dowel pins on the starter cover. Just be aware that the pins are a simple friction fit, not press fit, meaning they can separate from the block or the cover with just your fingers. They may get lost during your painting expedition.
