I hope you can understand what I'm trying to say...
(I'm pretty sure) it goes from the battery to the crankcase (above the clutch plates, and roughly in between cyls. 3 & 4 (about 2/3 from left to right on the engine casing). You should see a bolt at that location which would connect the wire to the case. Releative to the timing tensioner, the bolt is back, below and to the right (if you were in riding position relative to the bike).
At least this is the case with my 93. Perhaps newer models are a little different.
Clean your connection well before you hook up the wire.
