I was messing with my carbs the other day and got to wondering, how exactly does the vacuum get transfered from carb # 1 through 2 & 3 and down to carb # 4 where the vacuum hose is? Hope it doesn't sound like a stupid question, I was just really trying to figure this out! There aren't any lines or anything that connect 1 carb to another.

Um.... huh?
The motor is essentially a giant air pump. When you thumb the starter, you are sucking air and gas into the motor which is ignited by the spark plug, which pushes down the piston making the crank move.
The vacuum is created in the process... pulling air into the machine, and pushing out the exhaust fumes.
Each cylinder draws it's own vacuum. Each carb has it's own way to "tap" that vacuum source.-Steve

It will work from vacuum from any carb, not just #4. Each carb pulls it's own vacuum from the intake side of the motor.-Steve
