make sure its not just oil from an oil change
some guys leave lower fairing on during oil change , any spilled oil will blow every where when you hit the highway

Well, I can't answer specifically for a pre 750. I have swapped the gasket on my post 600 and it wasn't bad at all. Just keep in mind that to drop the oil pan, you need to remove the header, so you'll need new header gaskets as well. While you're dropping the oil pan, if it hasn't been done to your bike already, you may want to consider adding the shift kit and or a fumoto valve for easier oil changes. The fumoto valve does require modifying the oil pan though, at least on the post Kats.

Also, tighten up your pans bolts. They can vibrate loose and cause a leak when the gasket is actually ok. I still had a slow leak in mine after I patched a hole last week. So, there was one Allen's bolt that was a little loose that was contributing to the leak. After I tightened it, the leak is 100% gone.

Hope this helps save you some time and money.

Remove the front header bolts, loosen the rear muffler mounting bolt. Let the exhaust drop. Remove the oil pan bolts (make note of where they go, as they are different lengths). Remove the pan, replace the gasket.

Oh yeah... drain the oil first.

well i guess what i'll do is grab my trusty oem service manual a beer and do sum reading and check my bolts first. what does this shift kit do? just make more positive shifts?

The hardest part of the job is getting off the old gasket. I recommend a wire wheel.

Yes, shifts are more positive and firm. There are two versions of the kit. One has just the spring and gasket and the other has a modified detent arm with microbearing also.

would it be similar to the feel of shifting without the clutch(smoothly)?

Somewhat but I don't do clutchless shifting much..

whats one of the big advantages if doing a shift kit besides more positive shifting.
