I just changed my brake pads 2 days ago. Well I have a 98 Katana but I quess it would be the same. Now from memory!!!

I bought EBC FA63 rear brake pads.

I read on one thread that the shim should not be placed. So I removed it.

    1) 1st, loosen and remove the 3 bolts. 2 on the brake rotor itself and the other rod support.
    2) Pull down the brake. Underneath is a plastic cover. Remove it so that you can remove the 2 wire retainers.
    3) After pulling the wire retainers, pull out from the sides the 2 metal rods that holds the brake pads in place.
    4) Pull out the pads and replace.
    5) Just reverse the process.

The only hard part is putting the wire retainers into the metal rod holes.
