  • Tranny toast?

From a stop light I put it in first, launched, 2nd gear. *crunch!* *klunk!* *grind grind grind grind grind....* popped it into neutral and came to a stop. I then put it back into first to see if it was just second and slowly let the clutch out. *more grinding noises*
I popped it back in neutral turned it off and walked it the rest of the way to work (good workout btw).

Given the description of the problem can any of you tech heads tell if it's a disaster, or if there may yet be hope. Also what would you recommend as a good place to start as far as opening her up to diagnose?

Worse case I sell it for parts or whatever use the $$ to pay off my car (its almost paid off, I know I'm not going to get much out of it) and start saving for the next one.

Best case, it's a pin, or a plate or something "simple" and more importantly cheap, and I can diy it.

I don't know enough about the trans in these bikes yet to be really helpful. However I have heard that if 2nd gear is toast then it seems to be not worth it.

"Tranny Toast" sounds like some crusty stuff in a hooker's panties...

But I digress. Do any shifting without the clutch?

Not often, but it certainly had happened, and on top of that who knows what the PO did to the poor thing.

One of the clips that hold the gears in place likely let go or poprd out and you have a gear floating around on the shaft smacking into other gears when it should not be.

I'm not one for scrapping and engine just because of a minor transmission problem, but if you have the $$ for a replacement engine to run while you tear this one down and fix it go for it.

HAHAHAH! I'm a tard. The damn chain came off, and I didn't notice until I was coming back from lunch and saw it hanging down. I had to replace that already!

                  Phew...

Thanks for the help guys. From now on first diagnostic procedure... open my eyes...

Hey, did you check your chain? It may have been loose, and slipped off of your sprocket.
