Is that the wagon or the sedan?

I like those older Datsuns wagons.

A couple days ago I saw a Datsun chrome emblem on a late model 300ZX. It gave me a chuckle, someone who remembers where Nissan's came from.

That is funny, I'd like to see that!

The wagon ofcourse, the weirder the better. While everyone else was building V8 Vegas and Pintos we were dropping small & big block V8s into anything we could get our hands on. My buddy built an Austin Mini with a blown 427, LOL, the driveshaft was about 18" long.

Sorry, no pics, we were too busy drinking and drag racing to care about pictures. That was a long time ago. Maybe my parents would have some, I'll have to ask.

random fact if you boost a carb you have to build an air tight box to go around the entire carb, some call it a carb hat or boost hat, never done it but started to do a 1st gen rx7 with the 12a carbed 2 roter, air flow becomes an issue if not built right the air goes in but is not distributed evenly + fuel puddles on the cylinder walls b/c the air is not turbulent enough to keep the fuel suspended within the air or atomized, the floats have to be pressurized or it will lean out i can't recall why i'll read up on it more

This obviously wasn't a policy cooked up by some coke-bottle-glasses-wearing shlub in the basement of some insurance company who's never even seen a motorcycle in person, right?

            Naaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh.

lol damn. they went from 5 psi right to 18 psi
i cant really imagine how awesome that would be. sometime id really like to boost a bike. i think the best idea would be to start with a factory fuel injected bike. sure would make the job easier.

                            the boosted tuna

I noticed a link posted here for my turbo 600.

I've done number of vehicle builds over the years and always wanted to do a turbo project. I decided that doing a bike was the place to start since it would be much easier to work around than a car. And picking the 600 was a choice based upon, "whats the $ loss if we blow it apart?"

                            Its definitely a strange animal.

It comes on hard and strong- to the point of feeling like its too much power (or radical power) for the weight. The turbo spool up is great though- it starts making boost at about 4000 but then will plateau briefly at the 6-7psi mark before hitting 6500rpm and moving up (immediately) to wherever the boost controller is set. Currently we have it set for 12psi, which seems to be a good pressure.

With the small turbo even during light around town riding its making boost- and whistling.

I've rode plenty of big bikes over the years and this thing is just something else.

We have the MegaSquirt EFI dialed in pretty well, no on/off throttle surges and instant response when you touch the throttle, but it took a lot of rides with the laptop in a backpack, logging data, to get it to feel like it should. And by that I mean "calmer"/smoother.

Its tuned to 13:1 under boost, as the MegaSquirt allows for AFR table tuning. So we're running plenty heavy to limit the likelihood of exploding internals for the pressure.

With about 2000 hard miles and no parts in the oil pan, or through the block, it was a successful project.

If you're wanting to do a unique project for the sake of learning- not just going fast, a turbo project is worth undertaking. The overall cost wasn't bad- I doubt we have $5k in the whole thing, including the bike.

                            Mike
