  • Stock carbs, to hell with em

Nine days now I've been screwing with the carbs on my 06 Kat with 13k on it, (Ref: frustration X 10). I've down loaded several pages of carb trouble shooting guides and have tried them all. I've had the carbs off and on no less than 25 times this week. I've reset the air/fuel screw from 1.5 to 3.5 turns at .25 intervals, I'm now back down to 2.75. The float levels have been set numerous times from a high of 11 mm to a low of 14 mm. The carbs are sterile clean, no blockages what so ever. I've synchronized every time I made a change. I sprayed starting fluid all around every vacuum line and carb connection boot checking for leaks, none. All carb "O" rings are in place and in good condition. I've readjusted the valves and installed new plugs. I put gasket sealer around the top of the diaphragms to ensure no leakage. While the carbs were off the bike I pulled air thru them with a shop vac to simulate engine air intake and the slides are working fine, physically checked them for binding, none. Visually inspected jet needles, and needle jets, no distortion or obvious damage. Pet cock has been inspected and cleaned. The bike just started sputtering bout four weeks ago, I then cleaned the carbs and have been at this ever since. This sux!!! I've talked to zuki techs and people on line, I've done everything. Still this bike does not want to rev over 3500/4000 rpm without hesitation, sputtering and dying. **** on it, I'm ordering an Ivan's jet kit tomorrow!!! Sorry for the venting, I just had to let off some steam.

Sorry to hear about this but if the problem is in the carbs themselves I doubt a Ivan's kit will remedy the problem. The jet kit is not a cure all for problem but rather to make what is running ok run better.

I would suggest finding the problem before getting the kit, If the bike was running fine and then just started running bad and you went through the carbs as you say then something else is wrong or you missed something.

    Just my $.02

EDIT: Have you checked the breather hose for the fuel tank? No obstructions or kinks?

Just curious, did you check your battery. I had somewhat similar problem. Turns out the alternator was trying to charge the battery which somehow was low on fluid and hardly any voltage was getting to the coils.

Just a thought. Easy to check.

Have you checked fuel flow out of the tank? Have you tried draining the gas, and refilling with new? Have you run it w/o the airbox on so you could watch the carbs, to see what they're doing? Have you revved the bike to the stuttering condition for a while, to see if one particular pipe stays cooler than the rest?

Yes to all the above. I'm running an auxillary fuel supply (home made). However, I've used the stock tank several times and the problem still persist. Haven't checked the coils, will check out the procedures for them and give a look see. Thanx for your inputs!
