So after replacing my engine with a newer 99 engine it ran well with a putter in first gear. I talked to a local shop and was told to run 93 and that problem went away. Now however there is an awfully loud ticking/knocking noise coming from the bike. It started recently and does it whether the bike is warm, cold, etc. I was told I should try changing my oil again to a good motorcycle oil instead of the mobil high-mileage I have been running. There also seems to be a slight gas smell in the oil. Today when I started the bike the ticking went away for a few minutes then just came back all of a sudden again. Other than the oil, if it could even cause this, what would make my bike do that?

First off the Kat should run 87..
If you have gas smell in the oil then you have a stuck float and that is dumping fuel in the oil. It's probably running super rich and that's why it sounds feels like crap at idle / low RPM. The knocking could be because at idle the cylinders that are flooding are not even running.
So to review:
Run 87 octane.
Fix the carbs.
Change the oil.
Stop taking advice from where ever you're getting it.

It did actually run better once I switched but I will be sure to switch back and the float was stuck after I got them cleaned but is fine now. Am I going to need to change the oil twice once with crap oil and once with good to get the gas out? And is there really a difference between motorcycle oil and "regular" oil. Only reason I ask is because the same guy told me that.1989 Katana 600
