I know it has taken me a couple of years to add to this thread.. but I stumbled back upon this page today and thought that I would let you all know what the gas smell was...

One morning I woke up and looked at the bike and there was a snowball on the side of my tank.. I was like WTF?? A snowball? I June? I later found that there was a pin hole in the gastank (at the corner where the tank meets the seat) and gas slowly leaked out (in gas form?) and created what looked like an ice ball. Interesting science stuff... so anyways, I took it to a shop where they fix gas tanks and they just put some hard putty over the hole, sanded it down a bit and presto! That fixed it. Total cost - $20.

I have since sold my bike, but thought that I would post this in case it would be helpful to anyone.

I am now moving to Florida, USA where I get to ride all year round!!!!!!!!
