  • Repaired or standard?

    Hi guys,

Did a search on the topic but the answers I'm after aren't really there.

Had my 99 Kat just a few days now and the only thing I want to change is the stock silencer. Upon inspection it appears to be one piece, end can to down pipes.

So I am wondering if this is standard or if it has simply had a hole repaired/welded in the past were there is supposed to be a join on the link pipe?

    Thanks for your time,

    Ben.

Depends, pics would help. Some manufacturers make a can/mid pipe as one piece.

If a one piece was the case, how would I go about replacing the silencer for a slip
      on/aftermarket one?

This pic is all I have at the moment, will try and get more later this week.

if indeed it is one solid piece no worries. When you procure a slip-on a lot of them come with a mid-pipe or it can be obtained separately.

          That is OEM.

Total 2 pieces... header and can/mid-pipe.

All aftermarket "slip on" systems sold for the bike will include a mid-pipe and exhaust can to make them plug an play.

Buying a can not specific to the bike will result in you needing to work out a mid-pipe solution.

Thanks for the replies. Yea I've found a Delkevic slip on that has the mid pipe, I'm just wondering were it joins as the OEM seems to merge with a weld. Here is a better pic

Where you can see the weld is where I thought I might find some sort of connection between the two. How would I go about removing this for the aftermarket slip on? Surely it isn't a case of cutting through it?

Just looked at my 98 600 and yours has been welded. There should be a clamp where you see the welds. My guess is someone welded it due to a leak. You may be able to get a muffler shop or welding shop to take care of it. Or source a used downpipe section.

Yea I thought so, just wanted to make sure.

Are there any other down pipes that will fit, for example 600 Bandit?

                Thanks guys!

Would it be possible to cut the existing weld, purchase an after market slip on exhaust and re weld that onto the link pipe?

Sure, a shop could do that no problem.
