  • Making a short pipe - How do we do it?

So I want to put a short straight pipe on my 96 Kat 600 cause it's cheaper than a full system.
I'm planning on buying a jet kit and either B12 headers or post Kat headers.
I've heard you need to dent the pan in order to fit it. Someone care to explain how you do that? Beat it with a hammer til the pipe fits?

As far as fitting the short straight pipe on, has anyone done it, and what does it involve? I'm a complete newbie to this sort of thing. I've got a friend that knows how to weld that has agreed to help if I do it.
Let me know if you have any advice.

If your gonna dent the collector, yeah.. pretty much beat it till it fits. Try not to collapse it too much...

    OR...

You could do it the best way and swap in a post oil pan and pickup, so you don't have to dent the collector at all.

NOOOOOO..... dent the COLLECTOR, not the PAN! Please don't swing a hammer at your oil pan.

If you want to run a straight pipe, then get a B12 or 98+ header like you were saying, and also get a B12 or 98+ stock slipon (since people just about give them away), and then cut the muffler off.

This is a B12 setup cut off with a hacksaw....

You can have my stocker for free + shipping...which, from PA, should only be about a bazillion dollars.

If you can swing a hammer at the oil pan and not crack it I'd like to see that....

            +1

Pre pan is aluminum, isn't it? Not known for bending, more for cracking...

How about sticking with the OEM header and fitting a short can; maybe even building your own if you've got a welder? You could even shorten your stock header if you need to. Make the can nice and fat and you might manage not to **** off the neighbors...

Take your exhaust, cut it off. There you go, straight pipe. Supplies:

-Some kind of inappropriate cutting instrument, the more inappropriate the better.
                -Ear plugs
-New friends to ride with because your old ones can't stand to listen to it for more than 2 minutes.

Been there, done that, regretted it immediately.
