just to add...if you add a slip-on, you should rejet the carbs, but you shouldn't NEED a jet kit.

Am I correct in saying this?

i have a full Vance & Hines SSR exhaust without changing anything else, and it runs fine. without dyno'ing it, i really dont notice any difference, and i took most of the fiberglass packing out...

on another note (slightly related). when i got the bike it had the stock exhaust and K&N pod filters on it. it could barely get the rpms over 5000. thats how crappy it ran.

personally if i had to chose between other people being able to hear me coming and shaving a 1/4 sec off my 1/4 mile (if it came down to that), id rather let those cars know im there.

Rejet means you physically install larger main jets.

that would be the same as using a jetkit without all the other jets...?

A jet kit is usually everything you need to rejet in one package. Needles, spacers, etc.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how hard would that be for someone to install a jet kit who has never worked on carbs but has a decent mechanical background?

                      about a 5
if you know how to read and work a screwdriver you can re-jet.
the hardest part is drilling out the caps over the mixture screws but use a drill stop on you drill bit and that's even super easy

I also put the V&H SS exhaust on my "96 600 last year. I'm in the process of installing a FactoryPro jet kit. Very easy to install. I'm still waiting for some other parts but I'll post after I get to take it for a test ride.

really, you say its easy? after you change all the needles out for the new ones, dont you have to tune all the carbs and sync them together? anybody who's ever taken apart anything mechanical should be able to take apart the carbs and put them back together. im worried about the tuning part.

craig, how's your bike run with just the exhaust changed? and are you talkin slip-on or full exhaust?
