      For those that really want to know, Missouri and Illinois require the plate to be lit and viewable at night from 100 ft I believe. A buddy of mine has been pulled over in both states for not having a lit plate.

      However, for the 03+, the plate light is in the taillight housing, so there is no issue when removing the fender or stock plate bracket. Only on the 98-02 (can't say on the pre-98s).

                I'm still very skeptical about how to mount the plate bracket to the back of the bike once the shovel is gone. I've seen some other bikes (not suzuki's) with a very "hacked up" looking job.... not something I want on my bike...

                  If you search this forum and others, you'll see examples of homemade fender eliminators that look as good or better than commercially available ones. I agree, if someone isn't skilled in this area, then leave it alone or buy one.
