my buddy bought a cf hugger with stupid looking paint on it. Is it possible to take that paint off w/o messing up the carbon fiber?

Wet/Dry sandpaper should do the trick.
Are you planning to repaint or just clearcoat it?

Just get the finest grit wet/dry you can and just take enough to get the old paint off. You should be fine.

Yeah, just use a fine grit sandpaper, and take the paint off. Carbon fiber is covered in a thick resin, so once you get the paint out of the way, it should be simple enought to make everything glossy and shiny once again....FrankenKat 1216

Good old fashioned sand paper does the trick...like mentioned above.
One thing I will say is wear a mask and do it somewhere outside or away from electronics. I've only worked with carbon a few times on race cars but from my experience carbon dust is a killer. Not only is it dirty but it's carbon which means that the particles will attract themselves to electrical output and motors and can really screw them.
