Do you absolutely HAVE to strip the old paint off before painting it... or can you just do everything over the original paint?

new paint will stick better to the old paint than the bare abs...
You just need to make sure it's sanded smooth!... or every dimple, mark, scratch, and hole will show up glaringly in the new paint job.
