Gas tank clearcoat repair (PIC)

Hi, Im trying to repair the paint on my tank 94 Katana where the clearcoat is peeling bad. I thought Id have to do a sand prime and paint but to much of my suprise the basecoat is in excellent shape. What grit sandpaper would you suggest to remove the clearcoat? I was thinking 1000 grit wet possibly? Suggestions?

Save yourself the time and frustration and repaint.Even if you could get the rest of the clear off, if you sand the base color you will see the sand scratches etc.

Don't try to sand just the clear off... Sand down and re-paint, then clear.
