One bit of advise I have is whatever you do, don't just grab the random orbital sander and start grinding away. You easily take them out off round and spend most of your time trying to get rid of various flat spots (which of course will be readily apparent once it's a mirror polish.
For something round, a flap wheel is your friend and soft pads are a must. I'm headed down to work in the morning to pick some stuff up so I'll take the camera with and post up some photos of the tools I actually use. A bunch of the setups are actually home made and should be easily adaptable to things your could find at harbor freight.
