  • Alternative to Spedee's cleaning the swing arm mod

well i did my own version of Spedee's swing arm mod. since i have a welder laying around, i decide to take a stab at it. so here we go:

1.dis-assemble the rear wheel so you can pull out the chain adjuster.

2.the bolt that sticks out back is welded to the adjuster. use a vise to securely hold it steady.

3.use a cutting disc or just a regular metal saw to cut that bolt out as close to the metal adjuster plate as possible.

4.after cutting, grind it smooth (but not to the point where it gets HOT!)

5.grab a bucket of water so you can cool the metal while grinding it. you dont want to build up heat coz heat will weeken the metal. (so keep it cool)

6.after you get it flat and smooth as a babies butt, that should get rid of the weld spots that holds the bolt in-place. it should look like this:

7.you'll still have the bolt head tacked on the inside, but thats easy. just grab a screw driver and a hammer to punch it out. make sure you dont bend anything!

8.get a pair of allen head bolt and nut (i used some flat head allen bolts) you can also use the fairing bolts/screws if you have any extra laying around.

**for the exact bolt sizes......i'll have to get back to you on that in the morning (i'll make sure i got the right size)

9.tack the nut on the inside part of the adjuster. making sure its dead center (or as close as you can get it centered) make sure the welded area is smooth. (Excuse the sloppy welding, but you wont see it anyway......so who cares?)

10.put it all back and it should look like this.... ENJOY!

BEFORE YOU ALL SAY ANYTHING.....I KNOW I NEED NEW CHAINS!

Now for the good part, lets hear what the CRITICS have to say

ok... here is where i sound like a n00b.... my chain looked like that within a week after getting it.

i oil it regularly and everything... so what am i doing wrong?

i didn't think rust looking stuff was that big of a deal, and that i could just scrub it off w/ steel wool or something.

Way to go. Looks good, and you save a bundle. Anything to rid our adjusters with that ugly threaded rod.

                  FYI..
                  I did the same thing..
However instead of tacking a nut in I made a "nut plate".
A 3/8 X 1 1/4 plate that is threaded for the screw, and
                  sits in the "u"..
                  I need better screws though
                  yours look better..
