Anyone have any experience swapping a '05 GSXR front end onto a pre 98 Kat 750? Just wondering what kind of mods would have to be made. Asking cause I found one(minus wheel and rotors) otherwise complete, for a great price.

I believe the pre's have a cable for the speedometer, so you'll need to fab something there, whereas the GSX-R is electro.
The steering stops will need to be cut down on the GSX-R and fabed for the Kat.
You may not have an ignition lock, can't quite tell from the parts fiche.
If the steering stem is too short on the GSX-R, you'll need to press it out and press in your Kat's stem. That will correct the top bearing issue, bottom bearing is the same.
If it is the right height, then you'll need the top bearing from Twin Works Racing.
Let see, what else is there...

he'll need a different set of gauges to run the speedo. a post98 sprocket cover to run the electric speedo sensor. a speedo healer to get the gauges right. other then that, Squiggy hit the nail on the head. oh if it doesn't come with the front fender then you will need a GSXR front fender. Also it probably would be wise to run the GSXR master cylinder. I'm probably forgetting a few things but it sounds like you got a good startLast edited by mreedohio; 01-05-2009, 02:00 AM.Chrome Project Part 1

that's a pretty bad idea. You'd be putting a suspension for a bike that's like 100 lbs lighter then a Katana on a katana. Not to mention I don't know how these guys miracle the Busa front end on a Katana, but the 05 GSXR steering head bearing are NO WERE NEAR the same. You also need the ENTIRE GSXR front end. Plus the electronic gauges. Go for it if you want, I'm just informing you, after all the stuff you need to get it will not be a "great price"

This is getting to be a habit agreeing with arsenic
As he points out there are issues with the weight the suspension was designed to handle but there is a good range of ajustment which will help sort this as long as you are not a very large fella, the forks were designed to be ajustable enough to suit a range of riders of different weights after all
The rest of his post rings true tho

The Kats forks are 41mm whereas the GSX-R's forks are 43mm. Are you guys saying that the metallurgy of the forks would not handle the weight stress of the Kat or are you saying the springs wont?

The bottom one is the same, so if the steering stem height is the same, then he needs to buy the modified steering head bearing from Twin Works Racing.
If he has to press out the stem, then the bearings for the Kat will work. This is based on assumtion of what's been done to Kat's and Bandit's. Whether or not the steering stem swap would actually work from that GSX-R to the Kat is something for actuall hands-on research.

if you found a way to make the swap happen it will be a guaranteed 1000% improvement over your stock setup regardless of the difference in weight of the bikes. The gsxr suspension is just that much better than the 30 year old technology ued in the Kat setup.
yesterday had the opportunity to speak with John Sharrard of Accelerated technologies (http://www.acceltechracing.com/), who is viewed as Canada's best suspension guy by many in the industry. We were discussing how to make my little SV "fat guy ready". The first words out of his mouth were 05 and up GSXR front end. Apparently in 05 Suzuki started using much stiffer springs in the 750 and 1000 (not sure about 600). in his estimation the 05+ gixxers are the best upgrade option for a hefty ride, wether it be bike or rider.
If you don't buy it, pm me the sale info. I may be interested.
cheers

They are different part numbers probably because one is ball bearings and the other is tappered/roller bearings.Last edited by squiggy; 01-05-2009, 01:00 AM.
