  • Getting ready to change fork seals...got some questions

Im getting ready to change the seals in my forks, so Ive been doing alot of searching and found some great links that will def help me out in the process. With that said, I do have a few questions I couldnt find the answer too.

    1. Is there a brand fork seal that seems to work the best for our Kats? If not, Im going to order the Fork Seal PRo Moly's.
    2. Is there any other seals I need besides the forks seals and the dust covers?
    3. I see that there are a few different types of fork oil weights. Whats the usual and whats a decent brand? I was gonna use the Bel Ray.
    4. How many liters of oil should I get?

    Thats for now
    TIA guys
    DJ

10w oil , you'll need a bit over 16oz per leg , so probably at LEAST 2 bottles (I did okay with 2) , and I just grabbed whatever fork oil they had in stock . The seals were some kind of aftermarket , don't remember the name . But they were something about "leak-proof" right under or in the name , and had a lifetime gaurantee . If your bushings are worn (they sit right below the seals and are metal ) , you'd probably wanna replace THOSE , but mine were GREAT , and it's a 93 , so ... . Other than that .... you COULD replace the stock spacers with pvc cut a little longer to increase preload slightly (not hard to do , and no dive under braking is kinda neat ) , and some 2" pvc to make a seal driver is a big help . Only costs like $2 .

How much longer do you make the spacer?

FYI, Both Cycle Gear and my local shop carry large bottles.
(Liters I think) It's a better deal and you have more than enough
            for both forks..

Has anyone done a tutorial on changing fork seals for post 98? I want to make it a winter project and I was going to throw in the PVC mod thing or I may make some out of aluminum.

                Post 98 isn't much different..
Only onse I can think of are:

                Different damper rods.
                Different dust covers.
Elimination of the drain/valve locater screw..

                Pretty transparent differences IMO

                    Yeah thats a scam IMO..
It takes 16.6 oz per leg.. so they sell it in 16 oz bottles..
                    Super..

BE CAREFUL!:I had gotten new seals and installed them to find out the aftermarket seals bottom looked like the stock seals top and vice-versa. This caused them to leak and me remove them and reinstall them the corecct way. Also...I tried 10W Fork oil first time and second time used 15w which I liked better for a little stiffer dampening under hard braking...just my personal preference.
On the brakes less than the gas,
                      More times than not,
                      I'M HAULIN ASS!!

Good tip. This happened to me as well.
                        For reference:

There are two "wipers" facing one way.
                        One facing the other.
                        (see below)
The two wipers face bottom to keep in the fluid..
One up to keep out dirt.
