Take a look here and pick a fluid that is in the mid 30's cSt @ 40 deg c.

I notice Mobile1 synthetic ATF is on that chart with a cst of 34.00. ATF works?

I haven't seen ATF in forks in awhile but I had taken a few sets apart and the fluid was a nice red color and smelled like ATF and felt like ATF. But yeah it used to be used in forks. I would still recommend a suspension fluid though.

I'm used to using BelRay 10 wt but it looks like ATF, feels like ATF and smells like ATF. I know ATF is a vegetable oil but no idea what fork oil is made of.

It'd be nice if ATF could be substituted. The nearest bike shop is a ways from here but there's Autozone all over the place.

I found a site today, that said the Forks hold 406 cc or ml. Looking for it again. Need to be SURE, plan to reassemble tomorrow.

Look in your service manual? I'll tell you for a fact it will be in there, shouldn't be wrenching on your bike and rebuilding things without the proper reference material.

Been looking for it for a couple days now (on a jump drive), but I found it tonight, and now my computer wont open it. Should be able to see it at work tomorrow. Wonder why there is such a big discrepancy between the examples given in this thread. 406 vs 227.

That is one reason I and many others recommend owning a service manual.
