  • Battery dead?

    hello all,
Got a 3 year old battery that came with my 97 Kat. I flled it with distilled water and charged it.

The lights and horn seem to work. Horn seems not that loud though.
    Bike does not turn over,
Ganted bike has been sitting for 9 months undercover outside, so could electric or in new of a new battery?
    Thanks again,
    Newride

    The horn is never loud.
If you can hear it it's pobibly at max volume

Does the bike even try to turn over?
Can you hear the relay clicking?
(on the right side under the seat)

You can try to short the relay by jumpering it
with a really large wire or wrench.
(connect the two large wires connected to the top.
Make sure the bike is in nuetral!)

Sometimes when batteries get drained they are dead.
You can jump start the bike from another bike or
a car.. Be really carefull though.

Was this battery a used unit that was 3 years old or a new battery that was sitting without the liquid for three years? I read that you filled it with distilled water, I thought that the jug that came with those batteries was acid solution. If it was water, would that even work?
A used three year old battery would probably be shot.

A moped I got came with a battery that was never installed and never had the solution put in. It worked just fine, and has for over a year. That battery was probably over 15 years old.

Fully charged, it needs to read 12.65volts or higher with the bike off (a new battery, fully charged, reads 12.9 - 13.2 volts).

I think it is the bike, a relay or something. Even if the battery was weak I would hear a click or something. if there is enough juice to hear the horn and see the lights work, it should turn over a little?
I will get a new battery anyway.
              Thanks to all again!

Lights may come on , and horn MAY work , but that don't mean it'll tunr over . Takes quite a few amps to get that starter to turn over the eninge . But yeah , the selenoid should STILL click .... Jump the selenoid to see if it'll turn over ?

Horn pulls about 4 amps max (about 50 watts).
Headlight pulls about 4.5 amps (around 55 watts) on lowbeam.
Starter pulls 25-30 amps (that's like 320-350 watts).
Massively different power requirements in terms of draw against the battery.
