Some of that has to do with changes in how the factories measure the horsepower on the bikes -- in the mid to late 90's, the magazine trade went after the "supposed" HP values the companies were publishing, as progressively more and more magazines started dyno'ing bikes as soon as they were turned over for testing.
The later models may be down a few HP, but there's not really a 15HP difference in any instance I've seen. The earlier values were rather enthousiastic (to say the least) and usually represented a best-of-breed, blue-printed and balanced engine, while the later values are closer to real-world outputs of a "typical" production bike before drive-line loses.
