  • Build your own portable air compressor

So as part of my emergency kit, I always carry around a tire repair kit in my Kat. It's already come in handy once as I got off work with a flat tire and a hole one time. Thankfully the gas station was next to my work so I just plugged the tire, rode the flat to the gas station *very slowly* and pumped it back up.

Now, given the chance that you get a flat in the middle of nowhere, what do you do then?

Thats where the air compressor comes in.

    Take one of these:

remove all of the plastics, cut off the pressure gauge and seal/solder the holes in it (its too inaccurate to use anyways, carry a nice digital one with you), shorten the wire length, bundle it up, and voila! a nice small portable air compressor to keep in your bike to compliment the tire repair kit.

    Of course, some pictures:

    Total Cost:
    Air compressor $9.99 canadian
    Tire repair kit $5.99 canadian
    Peace of mind: priceless

oh yea, for this I suppose you'll need a 12v cigarette adatper wired straight to the battery complete with a fuse and relay. Luckily I already had all of that installed for my heated grips so I just tapped into the same power source.

Mental note, when using air compressor, do not turn on heated grips.

Cost for adatper: $0.50 (took off a splitter purchased at the dollar store)

    That is Cool man!!!
I've seen the type that connect to the
spark plug hole but your's is much better!
(Plus you dont get gas in your tire!)

Cyber needs to make some room for that one!

On longer road trips, I always have the Givi bags, so I just pack my foot-pump instead... But I like this idea a lot... I've been thinking about strapping a thin-tubed bicycle-style pump to the frame rail under the rear fairings as a just-in-case/always-there item... As it is, I doubt I'd have space for even this mod'd compressor under my seat given what I already carry under there.

I have met riders who have installed electrically driven compressors in their fairing recesses in the upper-fairing (pretty much permanent installations), in the same sense that others install air-horns. If I recall correctly, the GoldWing in certain years (early models) had an optional on-board compressor with a retractable hose in an opening low in the fairing (basically right in front of the right leg, in the fairing piece that faces the rear and holds the A/C vents, etc further up).

          Cheers,
