In the same boat w/ ya, not a handy person, but when inspired, which the bike will do, some things are just darn easy. Check out my profile for the things I done that are all easy. Only thing is I got the Ivans Kit installed (not that skilled)
Ray - Thank you, may I have another?

Slip on exhaust, shovel chop, CA lenses, smoke windscreen, inginition advancer, illumiglo gauges, and most definatley upgrade the tires if they are stock.

Future considerations would include upgrading the suspension too.

                  The voice of reason:

Before you start modding it all up, decide what you want to do with it in terms of use. Obviously mods that are good for long-distance touring are not the same as mods that are good for drag racing or stunting, etc., and some mods can sometimes conflict with your intended purposes.

The single most import mod IHMO (and many other's opinions as well) is changing the stock tires out for a set of better tires. The tires that come stock on that bike are slow-handling, wallowy, and really put the bike at a loss. A good set of premium tires ($250 - $300, mounted and balanced), such as Metzeler's Z6 Roadtecs, Pirelli Diablo Stradas, or PowerPilots can make a world of difference in the whole handling/braking/grip equation in ways that you may not be able to even imagine without having tried them. The Z6's are my preference out of that list, but the others are quite good as well... Since your bike is still new, swap tires now and sell your old ones on eBay in a couple months when the weather up north turns warm (and people go looking for tires) -- you'll get at least 80% of what the new tires set you back out of the old ones, if you shop wisely for the new ones.

                  Cheers,

anywho...you'll be much happier getting rid of the shovel. and don't worry about the cutting thing. you'll get past it.

even the most non mechanically inclined person can handle the shovel chop. Its no problem at all. The nervousness of cutting into a perfectly good bike is the worst part

I'm with Cyberpoet on this one...the stock tires have GOT to go. Changing out the tires for a set of the Metz Z6's gives an incredible increase in your confidence, and your bikes abilities.....They're a great balance between mileage and grip; something like a pilot power is leaned more to the "grip" side than mileage, and your bike doesn't REALLY need that much stick, as it's not a high-powered machine....plus, they cost more, and since they won't last as long, you're looking at replacement more often...which essentially means even MORE money spent on tires. Z6's are a perfect balance of grip, predictable handling, mileage, and comfort without being outrageously expensive.

Also, going to a 160/60ZR17 out back will help your bike "fall" into the corners more naturally, as the wider section tire has a rounder profile. Just a thought.

Mesh mod is my #2 cheap mod, next to the shovel chop. You can usually do a mesh mod for less than $20 if you do a little research first. (and believe me, there's PLENTY of topics on KR about it!)

After that, you definitely need a solo cowl....right Jim? Oh, and be sure to check out ne-oublie's new dogbones - available in shorter and longer lengths than stock, allowing you to raise the tail for a nimbler bike, or lower it to accomodate short legs! They're cheep too!

Personally, I loved the Braada cowl and exhaust upgrades but new tires make the most sense. I'm quite happy with the Battlax BT-020s on my bike.
