Man I rode a 90 mile round trip today.I froze my tail off. It's was not so much it was cold 44 and sunny but man I had a 20 mph NW wind that kick my but and made me even colder.I have a first gear textile jacket I am ok if I have a polar fleece under it but today I did thinking it was sunny. What type gear does everyone wear in the winter. This jacket has protection but I have a Thor MX jasket with non but longer and warm any ideas.

    thermal undersuit & a turtleneck - jacket w/liner.

if this going to be the norm for you ( cold winter ) look into heated grips & heated vest.

      44°F.......
      okay thats 6,6° C
Thats very cold to ride a bike ! I think you need winter-tires and Moonboots*lol*

I think Ski underwear and good wind closely clothes are obligation.
      Heated handles can help also.

I also wear under armor cold weather shirt.I think I am going to try my 3 and 1 parka and see how it does i never rode with it but it has more layers where the first gear just has a little vest that soe no good. The vents in the first gear in front of the shoulders even closed let way to much air in.

the problem with winter type gear is that it's so bulky and if it's loose fitting it flaps wildly in the wind. ( also the protection isn't very good )

winter riding imo adds to the likelyhood of crashing - slippery roads, poor visability, road debris - not to mention cagers driving before their window have defrosted. also remember that when your cold your reaction time is slower.

the BEST solution is to continue to wear your leather gear with the addition of a heat source. a one size larger wind proof jacket can also help greatly ( worn over your leathers )

I'd suggest looking for riding gear specifically made for such weather. I have to say I've had a hard time finding this type of gear in the US, but it may be in large part because it's not stocked in Florida dealerships/accessory shops.

I have a German-made "Polo" brand jacket I picked up at Polo MC stores in Germany that's perfect for such weather... And I've seen equivilents in many European MC shops... It's not very bulky (no more so than my JR sonic), uses a combination Gortex and super-dense-weave nylon and who-knows-what, good down to about 40 (F) without the liner and down to below freezing with the thermal liner in it. My knees would be frozen solid before my belly button even got a hint of a chill. A lot of it is also the design; it has off-set wind-proof flaps for the zippers (imagine the zipper is centered, then add another inch of fabric to both sides of the zipper and a combination of velcro and snap-buttons to hold that extra inch off to one side); zero wind penetration. I'm sure somebody in the American market has to offer an equivilent....

              TIPS:
Always wear your helmet when trying on new jackets, esp. cold weather jackets -- the way the collar & shoulders sit could interfere with your helmet's position or head movement.

              Cheers

I've been riding with polypropilene underwear and leather gloves in 40°F weather. If it gets colder I'll add thermal socks and neoprene under the gloves, that would be good enough for 30°F

Windbreaker stuff on the outside does alot of good . Then my normal leather gear , then jeans and sweatshirt ,then longjohns . Does me pretty well down to about 35 . Don't forget good gloves , neck protection , and wool socks .

If you can dress in layers and still be comfortable u'll be all set. I rode home 2 nights ago from work in a driving rain storm in about 38-40 degree weather or so,and windy. My rain gear kept me dry and for the most part I was comfortable, but alittle chilly till I got home; nothing major though.

At the beginning of this season I picked up a pair of used Widder lectric-heat gloves with a simple on/off switch. While the got the job done for keeping my hands warm my neck was always cold, and my chest was never comfortable.

I did a bunch of research, and spoke with several very knowlegable folks. One suggestion was the Cordoa(sp?) riding suit. The woman I buy all my accessories from said: 1) You will feel like the Michiline Man. 2) You're going to spend $1000 3)Don't you already have a lot of nice gear?

Her point was that I already have several jackets.

The Gerbing jacket liner is the perfect addition. Reason being that it's small and light enough that you can carry it year round in case of cold. I decided to pair the liner with a set of the Gerbing gloves on a dual controller setup.

I have only been out twice with the new setup, but it is very comfortable. The gerbing gloves have better dexterity than my other set of cold weather gloves or the widder ones.

The jacket liner fits like a sweatshirt underneath my Joe Rocket textile jacket. I can still move, twist, look, lean, etc. The only difference is that I have to be aware of the controller unit clipped onto my pocket.

Now, the gerbing setups will heat to 140 deg F, and are supposidly good down to about 0 deg F for cold weather riding, but I havn't tried in anything colder than 40. When I was riding in the 40 deg weather, I barely had them turned on and was very comfortable even at highway speeds around 70Mph.
