  • Won't run right after carb clean

Hi guys, I'm needing a little help here. I decided to clean the carbs on my 93 katana gsxf 750. It was hesitating and didn't seem very smooth. After doing a full clean it now won't run properly. When I start it cold with the choke, it starts and revs high(normal). After a short time it starts sputtering and the idle starts to drop to the point where it will shut off without throttle. Idling is screwy as well and I can't get it right with the screw. I noticed a little black smoke when it's revved up.i installed new plugs at the same time.Is there something I was supposed to do after cleaning? Some adjustment ? I've checked several times to make sure they were installed solidly in the boots thinking vacuum leak. I don't know. I tried to save myself a few bucks and now I'm unable to ride. Not good. Please help.

how far did you go in the cleaning? Did you separate carbs? Did you inspect all the rubber? Float heights? is your tank clean? Where is your pilot screw set? We need all the info you can give us.

I never separated the carbs ,just stripped them down. Cleaned the jets and had to remove the floats to get at them. They are now at around 12 mm's from what my crappy ruler is telling me. I used carb cleaner and compressed air.I adjusted the screw to 2.5 turns which it was already set at but I checked them all. I removed the top and cleaned all those pieces including the needle. It all is pretty spotless. I wonder if its a small adjustment?

you will have to pull the carbs & take them back to the bench , disassemble
one at a time ( use carb cleaner & use compressed air) to blow everything out, remove everything from the carb, floats ,air screw,jets...ect
make sure none of the holes are plugged!!! I use a flashlight ..lol it works.
clean everything & set the mixture screws at 2.5 turns out from where they stop or bottom out. lets us know everything that you have done..Good luck

Yes I've done exactly all those things before I posted. I learned a lot from this forum and have tried a few things. Would a mechanic find this problem in less than an hour do you think?

Check your spark plugs. All 4 of them. What condition are they in? Post a close up picture of each if you can.

Google 'spark plug chart' for helpful guides on reading spark plugs.

Not saying this will fix your problem, but it'll help with your diagnosis. Your plugs are your eyes into what's happening in your combustion chambers.

Floats should be at 14.7mm +-1mm.
Did you bench sync the carbs before re-installing?

if you didn't pull them completely apart you need to do a more thorough cleaning then bench sync, and sync them once they are on for the best result, also check all the rubbers are in good shape and you have the rubber plugs in the carbs
never argue with an idiot, they'll drag you down to there level and beat you with experience.

No I never. Is this mandatory after a cleaning?

If you touch the linkage you need to bench sync. That gets things close enough for the bike to run. After you get the engine warmed up all the way (ride for about 10 minutes) you need to do a vacuum sync.

Ok I'll have to research how to do these things after work. This sucks. Except that I'm now learning how to do all this. The hard way. Lol

syncing? only if you want it run right lol. CV carbs open the slides based on vacuum and if its off between carbs they wont get the correct amount of fuel or air so yeah to run right its pretty much mandatory
