  • Torque specs help

I recently got clipped by a car from behind and cracked my starter cover on the left side. I have a new one coming but need to know the torque specs for putting it on. If anyone knows what or where I can look besides "search",which have already done all over here and the net, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you click on this link below, it will take you to the thread with the downloadable 98+ service manual. You can download it and read through it at your leisure. I own a pre-98 so I don't have the Clymer's manual for your bike. Sorry. This is the best I can do for you.

Not much for an engine cover . Think like 15 ft/lbs or something . I KNOW I never have mine on THAT tight , but they never leak . I just snug them up , not even worrying about the torque wrench for those .

        nevermind, it's not in there.
I doubt it's any more than 12 lb-ft, and probably closer to 8.5 lb-ft. Check the manual (Court provided the link).

          Think "finger-on-the-socketwrench" tight .

I tried looking up the torque spec in my manual last night and I did not see anything for the cover. It just said something like snugly bolt the cover on. I would torque to 9-10 ft lbs.

Great! That's one less thing I'll have to buy right night. I can just wait till next payday to get a torque wrench. The thing that makes me the madest though is the bike is only about 30 days old. Thanks for all the help.

You may be able to borrow a torque wrench from a parts store such as Advnaced Auto.

I believe that Suzuki calls out the use of a thread locker. I do not think that it would hurt anything.

No. No blue locktite on the starter cover, IMHO. Because you don't want to have to use that much force to get them out again if needed...

Oh, and if you hear any cracking or creaking noise, stop tightening! That means the bolt is already over-tight.

                      Cheers,

What would the kat riding world do without cyberpoet? Thanks again.

I doubled check and Suzuki does recommend thread lock 1342 (low srength) for the cover bolts, but hey what do they know.
