What kind of cruise control?
Cost can be anywhere from $2.00 to $125.00 depending if you want the John Deere O-ring to an electronic cruise control.

the oring link above takes 10 seconds to install , binds the throttle grip to the bar end and cost is only a couple dollars
throttle meisters are about $125 and install fairly quick, works on above type therory
true electronic cruise control (audiovox?) just like your car , again about $125 but going to take you several hours to installBlood , its in you to give! http://www.blood.ca/

Those are passive cruise control, a.k.a. throttle lock. they will manually hold the throttle in the same position when you engaged it. All of them offer the ability to manually adjust them as you go up and down inclined roads. As well as the ability to unlock the throttle.
Then you have an active cruise control, a.k.a. an electronic cruise control the kind found in cars. They will hold a set speed and automatically adjust the throttle to compensate for any changes in elevation.
I installed an electronic cruise control made by Audiovox. It is a universal design. It is designed to be installed in an automobile, but with a bunch of R&Ding I was able fit it to my 2001 Kat.
The advantage the Post's (1998+) Kats have over the Pre's is the VSS. It is the "vehicle speed sensor". The Post's Kats have an electronic speedo-meter. The Audiovox CC get's it's speed signal electronically from the vehicle. The Pre Kats use a mechanical speedo-meter. It still can be done in theory because the Audiovox CC kit does come with componets to allow monitoring speed though magnets that would have been connected to a automobile's driveshaft. So, in theory, it could be modified to fit a motorcycle.
Here's a couple threads already on this subject.
