  • need help!!! problem with painting

i just got done painting my bike it looked nice. now just got done puttin on the clear coat. and all of a sudden there are spots of white shade. dont know what happened. i bought duplicolor paint and duplicolor clear coat. did i paint it wrong? because before the clear coat everything was fine...

White shade would indicate that you got moisture into the clear coat (such as painting at too high a humidity).

I'll wait for one of the paint specialists around here (SweetLou?) to tell you how to get it out, but I'm guessing the answer will be wet-sanding the clearcoat back off and respraying it.

    Good Luck!

Is the clear fully dried? Often times, especially if your using rattle cans the clear will build and look white. Don't worry, if this is the case it will clear out as it dries. In fact when I am painting something I use that whiteness to make sure I've got a heavy enough coat on, build but not running.

If the clear is dry then most likely what you are seeing are spots where you didn't get your base thick enough and the primer is showing through making it look discolored because of lack of coverage.

Well, you can wet sand using a really high grade paper, like 1500, maybe even 2000, but if doing that , take your time and go slow, you don't want to sand to much into the actuall paint. Yeah, sounds like to much humidity made moisture go into the clear. Another option is to just sand down with 380 or 400 grit, reprimer, and redo it. Sucks, but may be your only other option.

When I was spraying mine with duplicolor clear I accidentally went too heavy in a spot and got a slight run. It made that cloudy look you talk about. It's about 80% humidity here all the time and the paint was black, and it didn't occur anywhere else. I'm not really sure how you can correct the situation, but if you repaint I'd go lighter on the coats. I think the can recommends two very light coats, and then a third slightly heavier one.

+1 on Braada's reply. A lot of clearcoats will have a white film before they dry, and yes, its usually caused by humidity, but by the time it dries, it will be a nice clear coat. If it doesn't go away just wet sand it down to the paint and apply another coat in a dryer environment.

Just to clarify, it took my paint 3 days to get this haze off of it one time (hot humid painting conditions) but turned out completely fine in the end. don't rush to sand it
