  • Rear tire size

What size rear tire do most of you use, what size works the best for all around driving, commuting to work, touring and a little aggressive mountain road driving. I now have 180 rear tire on my 2003 750f

180? Do you have a different swing arm on your bike? I have the stock size 150 on mine. I've heard of 160's on Kat's with stock swing arms, but not sure I've ever seen a 180. You have any pics I'd like to see this beast.

yeah, Id like to see that too! If it is a stock swing arm It's gotta be wedged in there.

I run the stock tire size.

There is a member here with a 240 or something (custom swingarm).
It doesn't matter what you ride, as long as you ride.

Fitting a 180 tire on a 4.5" rim, and then mounting that on a Post Kat won't give you that much of a fit issue because the tire has been "transformed" from a 180 with proper profile, to about a 170ish with a warped profile. You may have to move the brake arm out a little (depending on tire brand you use, and the size of the tire as well). There is a simple mod for that with unbolting it from the caliper and then using a longer bolt to mount it to the side of the caliper at the same spot. Rim sizes don't flex or change, unless you change the rim with another. Going larger simply means the rim pulls the edges of the tire in (and the reason for little clearance problems generally).

That is assuming the poster hasn't done any mods/rim swaps.

I have (see my sig) and run a 180/55 on my Pre Kat. The minor reduction in turn on my apex line when running max (which I almost never do.... ) as compared to everyday smoother riding, transitions, and comfort make me very pleased with it.

Not sure what the previous owner did to the bike, but I've only had it for 2 Mo's now. Yeah its a 180 tire and every thing looks to fit good. But then again he did heck up some other items on the bike, so who knows. I didn't know the 180's does not normally fit on 2003 750 kats?
The tire will need to be replaced soon, and I was asking what size you've ran and what results you got from to help me decide what size tire to replace it with. The bike does ride real nice now.

If you go back to the stock 150 or even step up a size to a 160 you will notice an even better ride from your bike. Go to ANY tire manufacturer's site and look what width rim they suggest for a 180 tire. I can promise you will not find any that say to mount it up on a 4.5" rim. It pinches the tire in too much and pulls the sidewalls at too much of an angle. Just my $.02.

I've had a few different tires on mine. The stock 150/70 Michelin Macadams (garbage), Dunlop D205 Sportmax 160/60 (not as bad as the macadam, but still crap), Shinko 005 Advance 160/60 (great tire for the money), and now Michelin Pilot Powers 160/60 (awesome).

i put a Dunlop gp 190-55-17 rear with the stock swingarm and 120-70-17 in front on my kat 2001...............believer or not!..........the tire rear finally size is 18.2cm and no problema amigo!

finally feeling a LOT better than the stock tire ........... high speed (232 kmh) & cornering.....

                        one question:
how measure for the width of the rim? you know that ?.... inside(this means for the side of the rim paint) or outside (inside of the tire)?
                        i measured 5.6 "width inside..........

(i see that example like a circle inside or outside)......help me!!!!!!!!!!

congrats, you probably ended up with a smaller contact patch than a 150/70 on the rear due to the tire being pinched in so far on the rim... not a good idea.

+1 .Not too safe to put a tire wider than a 160 on a 4.5 rim.I think one company does make a 170 that will fit without any issues.
