  • The Dark Side! Any thoughts on Buell?

Well since my Katana is down and out for awhile, I was looking at new bikes. I love my Kat and will probaly rebuild her, but she has gotten up there in miles and Id like something a little newer and more reliable. Ive always loved Buell. American made and a sportbike, what could be better? Ive always had a soft spot with the Lightnings and the Ulysses, but Ive never met anyone that has ever owned one. 1203cc 101hp, and Its sposed to handle better than a gixxer. Anyone have any opinions?

I found this one on ebay and its killing me!

Im lacking of funds, (yes I know it doesnt make sense to look at bikes when youre broke), but my wife is getting a promotion and raise at the end of the summer so it may be time for a bike loan.

I curious about this too. I have always loved the firebolt, but don't know anyone that owns one. I heard the engine reliability isn't the best. I have had the Kat over 5 years now, went from 23,000 miles to now almost 65,000 miles with no issues.

Curious to see what other responses are out there.

      test ride first...

you'll get to find out pretty quick if you could live with one...

I'd probably pass on any Buell based on looks alone...

However a Harley XR1200 is strangely cool to me...

I know a couple people with Buell's. NIce bikes with a lot of nice features. It would be nice if Harley would support them a little better.

All the reliability issues I ever heard of with the Buells were centered around the HD engine, now that they are using the Rotax engines, I haven't heard any complaints.

            Yuck.

definately ride one first. Harley has a great setup for test rides. once a year they have a HUGE group test ride at the assembly here in Kansas city. If you aren't near a plant (likely) they also have mobile trailers that drive around to various dealers and give test rides. all it takes is a licence.

I test road an XB12R which I was seriously considering, and came away a little confused. It was cool, but didn't really behave like I expected a sportbike to. I can't really explain it, something about how quickly it reved and the low redline, it seemd like I was constantly shifting.

The final deal breaker for me was the vibration at idle. It was UNREAL. the mirrors and handlebars shook comically, probably 1/2" in each direction.

It was a really cool bike, just not my cup of tea. Maybe someday....

They're definately worth considering though I think.

I worked with a dude who loved buell and would ride nothing but them. He said the only bike he ever had that was not buell like like a 95 CBR 600. He said the only thing that drove him nuts was that he was constantly scraping the exhaust when he went over the slightest bump.

2005 Firebolt XB9R sitting next door for sale, asking $5600 I think... Looks just like this, but has a different can under neath.

Neat looking bike, really like how they did the front brakes.

Ive been watching Youtube vids all afternoon. Im think Im hooked, so I think Ill spend my lunch hour tomorrow at the Harley Dealership.

                        My concerns:
                        1) Only 5 gears, Im used to 6
                        2) Redlines at 7500 and makes 85% of its power at 2500 rpms.
                        3) Motor puts out a lot of heat

Kinda the opposite of my 750, Im used to the bike "winding" up to make power. I guess these make torque right off the bat. One review said if you arent used to the clutch is extremely easy to pull wheelies.

Not particularly on subject here, but I was wild about Harleys until I got a 1200 Sportster Custom which handled like an angry donkey and threw the drive belt at 10 thou miles at the tune of $435. The last tune it sang for me...traded it for a new VTX1300C in less than 30 minutes with no regrets.
