  • '97 Kat 600 Biggest tires for cheapest price?

I have a 97 Kat 600 and am pretty sure it has 140's on it now...but what's the widest tire I can put on there without mods? Also, I'm in college so price on the tire brand is a major factor considering it's gonna run me $50+ to get it mounted too... THANKS!
Current Bike: 2005 SV1000S K5 Red, 7,xxx miles, Hot Bodies Double Bubble Tinted Screen, Hot Bodies Fender Eliminator, Pirelli Diablo Rossi's, LED Flush Mounts, Front/Side/Rear Sliders, PC-III USB, K&N Air Filter, aTRE Mod, TechSpec Tank Grips, Solo Seat Cowl, Corbin Seat, HEL SS Brake/Clutch Lines.

    Working on installing: TPS mod

You should definitely use the search tool. This has been discussed and rediscussed hundreds of times. Just search tire size. Also, a lot of bike shops through mounting in for free if you purchase the tire from them. Soo, consider that when you find one online.

Before you get flamed...I believe a 150 is the widest you can go on a pre-98 safely. As for prices, check the net...(this is asked often, so try and use the search feature)

Just food for thought...what would people on this forum say if I told you there used to be a 220/55R17 Dunlop Qualifier on the rear of my Kat with no rub. I'm thinking it must be a different swingarm setup...Odd right? Let me know what you think! I now have a DUnlop 150/70R17 on it and it looks pretty small in comparison.

What rim do you have on your Kat? On a stock rim, a 150/70 is recommended. Lots of guys do a 160/70, too - HS2020 comes to mind - but a lot of guys on the board recommend against going more than 150 on a stock rim.

Like others have said here, search and ye shall find... you'll probably find that Dunlops are not preferred either.

I run a 160/60 on a pre98 rim for over 6 years now. It is fine to run that.

And, Jimmy's running a special on Contis (MUCH MUCH MUCH preferred to the Dunflops), too.

Well, first I would say that Dunlop Qualifiers don't come in that size. Biggest they come is 200/50-17. Second I would say that you must have a different swingarm and wheel, since I see no way that anybody worth their tire spoon would try to mount a 200/50 on a 3.5" rim.

if the 220 had air in it, the rear end was modded for sure!

Well the 220 is no longer on there, but when I hit up Bright Wire later this week to help tear apart the bike, I'll try to take some pictures so you can all see what it looks like.
