  • HeadLight Question

The short version, is it possible to replace the lens on the main headlight without tearing up the whole housing?

A little over a year ago I deflected by Kat off the back of a minivan. I replaced all the plastic that was damaged relatively quickly so I could get back on the road. However, there is a big scratch on the headlight lens. It was not cracked and did not appear to hurt the illumination. Well at least not directly ahead. The scratch is off to the left side. Well lately it has started to bother me and I was wandering if I could just replace the lens or if I had to get a whole new unit. I have seen some lights on eBay that had good lenses but broken housings. Just tiring to get an idea of how expensive this annoyance is.

No, you need the whole thing, I would guess. I never just seen a lense, and yes you can find a headlight on eBay fairly easily.

Could sand the scratch out (if it's not a deep gouge) and buff the lense.

if the scratch isn't too deep you can "buff" it out. i use micro mesh sand- paper and polish to take scratches out of acrylic bathtubs. i have to guess the plastic cover on our headlights is similar. they have kits and instructions at this site.
Buy 10 different Micro-Mesh products here. These cushioned abrasives provide ultimate finishes. Polish metals, plastics and painted surfaces. Headlight restoration kits available.

Yup, those things are 1 piece, and about $250 new or just under $200 used.

Are you sure the scratch is the only damage? I managed to hit a post with mine and although the assembly looked fine on the outside, when I pulled the fairing off I noticed all the mounting tabs had sheared off.
