  • Could this be my CDI ??

I have a katana 750f 99 and it wont start. I just changed the plugs, they were very wet. With new plugs she still wouldnt start. I used my meter on the coils with 12.4 volts going to coil 2. but coil 1 have nothing at all. Is it possable for the cdi to only give off voltage to one coil?

It's possible, but I'd check you coils wiring, ie: the power wires going to the coil. Trace them back towards the wiring harness and look for grounded spots (shorts). Also, check the coil connections...........

Then, check the coil itself for continuity per the manual.

Coudl be the CDI...............remove the wires to each coil, switch them, and see iof it's the coils or wiring..........
I've owned over 70 Katanas - you think I know anything about them?
Is there such a thing as TOO MANY BIKES?
Can you go TOO FAST on a bike?

The CDI unit does not provide voltage to the coils the battery does. But the coils are controled by the CDI unit on the negative side. This ofcourse is if you have CDI and not tranzistorized ignition. The only way to know for sure is by the wiring, or wiring diagram. I don't know off the top of my head which you have...

Most street bikes won't be using AC CDI, and although I don't know for sure what ignition system is on your bike I'm fairly confident it's not the AC CDI system.

Do you (Anybody) know for sure if the 99 has CDI or tranzistorized?

I edited my post and you answered it before I finished.OK so there should be battery voltage at the coils with the key on, side stand down, in neutral, kill switch in the run position. If not in neutral then the side stand would need to be up.

It's been awhile since I was into a kat's wiring so... I'm doubtfull that it's the CDI unit which would be good news. Something else is wrong...

I'm also curious as to why Muck had wet plugs too? muck, you got a wiring diagram dude? I could help better if you did..There's only three real problems in wiring. Shorts, opens, grounds. All can be hard to trace...

I had coninuity in both coils. but was getting a " - " on the multi meter with the side with no reading, which I assumed to mean a short. I have a haynes manual with the diagrams in side. I'll need another warm day to sit and track it out.

your profile and your post say 99 750...........your avatar shows an early 750........????????? You recently upgrade?

On your "-"..............yeah.....looks like you have a dead short somewhere........

I'd look at teh wires before they enter the wiring harness up front around the cross bar that supports the tank. I've found a few there. Next best place is under the seat bracket just in front of the battery where the wires comes out of the harness again and then run to the CDI. They sorta run over and under the brackets and such in that area and can rub raw.
