  • My Yazukati build

Well I found a swingarm almost complete, only thing I need is a wheel now.

The ninja swingarm is 9.125 inches wide and the stock katana is a 9.625. I dont know the bolt diameter yet but Im sure its not the same....A couple spacers and viola new swingarm...Now all I need to do is get this rear rim for $75-100 shipped and I'm set. I will post progress pics from start to finish.....but for now here are the parts im swapping in...

    The bike:

What are you doing as far as the brake setup?

Are you going to cut the lower frame rails? If not, you might be in for trouble. Insert the swingarm into the frame, run the pivot bolt through it and them check for clearance under the left (shifter side) footpeg. It's likely the arm flare out to the left a bit more and will touch there and not be able to make a full range of motion.

Waltari- I am cutting the lower brace off, I am looking for some rearsets right now......any advice on which might work best? Im also going to be doing tail swap so the lower brace needs to go anyway..

TylerC-the swingarm came with pretty much everything I need other than the brake caliper so when I swap it over I'm going to try to use the 04 zx6rr brake caliper as well.

Waltari I messaged you about some help with the front end.....I want to swap it out. I hate the feel and setup of the katana and wanted to know if you could help me out with switching it to something else....like yours?

What are you building out of the 82 Kat? Thats a crazy looking swingarm setup..dual rear shocks.....nice.

Pretty much anything will work except ducati rearsets. I tend to stay away from R1 sets as well as thhey're quit a bit longer than most. Alot of 90's CBR, RR or Kawasaki sets can be had pretty cheap on fleabay if you wait them out. I think the ones on Frankenkat are from a 93 CBR900rr if I remember correctly. You can also watch for ones off brand new bikes...alot of people buy the the brand new 06 SS bike and then run out buy $500 rearsets for them and sell the stockes for $20-50....crazy.

I'm running 92 GSXR750 triples and everything else is from a 2000(01?) Yamaha R1. The newer R1 forks are spaced differently but around 2000 they slot right into the gsxr triples as the correct width. The gsxr triples from gsxr750-1100s 91-95 should all be a bolt in if you just want to swap to a simple gsxr USD front end. I've got a set of 2001 GSXR1000 forks that are going into the streetfighter but not sure what I feel like doing for the triples on that yet.

I'm building something similar to this out of my 82

It's already got 93 GSXR USD forks and a GSXR rim slotted into the stock swingarm. The dual shock arm is off a ZRX1100 and I have some really nice shocks of a ZRX1200. I think the 02 Bandit motor is going in as well...basically looking to make a 82 Kat that handles better with a bit more power on tap that looks really mean. I'm also bracing the frame for rigidity...Mojoe, see how it goes fitting all the parts for the bracing, if it doesn't take too long I'll make you up a set.

What did you have to modify to get the gsxr tripples/steering stem to work? I thought I read something about having to modify the steering lock.

You come up with some crazy stuff man....I wasnt intending on keeping this bike but after I seen updated pics of yours and nighthawks I have the bug again so I decided to keep it and cut it up.....for the price I paid I cant complain

Do you know what generations of GSXR's were the same as the 92? Was it like 90-93 or something like that?

What did you pay for the swing arm?

I got the complete rear minus the brake caliper and wheel for $174 shipped...

                    the complete rear would be

                    swingarm
                    shock linkage
                    shock
                    brake caliper mount
                    axle with spacers/adjusters
                    hugger

I found a complete front minus a brake caliper and a upper tripple but I found the upper one as well.

All I need to know is what I have to modify and how hard it is.

I also bought a set of 04 gsxr rear sets so thats 1 less thing on the list...after the front is done and the rear swingarm is swapped I can move onto saving for a motor......which I havent decided what I want yet.

Really, all you should need to do is modify the lockstops. Make note of how far your forks will turn each direction with the stock forms and them modify the gsxr lockstop to duplicate that range of motion.

Also, if you want to use the fork lock on the ignition, I seem to recall I had to modifit the opening in the frame to get it to line up with the new location of the ignition. Other than that they'll slot right in.

I'd try and hold out for a bandit 1200 motor. More torque and usually lower mileage and better shape tha the older 1127 motors.

Figured out where the lockstops are.....are they REALLY necessary? I know the help tank slap or whatever but if your handlebars are going that far without you holding onto them you are going down anyway.

Also how did you tackle the bottom linkage for the shock? Did your RF setup just fit on or what? I forgot about that part until I took my stock shock off today. Im hoping its not to much of an issue but I think the ninja shock linkage may be closer than the stock kat part..
