At what point does the stator begin to charge the battery? or does it vary by manufacturere, specific bike?

My Kat goes in to get the plugs replaced, and the carbs cleaned out on tuesday. I could probably do the carbs myself, but I prefer to leave a maint. paper trail with the dealer..just to be safe.

With the problems I've been having lately getting it started, as mentioned in a prev. thread..the carbs/plugs appear to be the obvious culprit. I've been keeping her running off and on, on the days that I cant actually ride, but I know just running at an idle drains the battery as well.

    Thanks

It varies between makes & models, but even varies between bikes of the same type as the rectifier pack ages (and there is some variance in the packs themselves, even when new). You can see when it kicks on and off, and what the charging levels are, by watching the voltage between the battery terminals with the bike running.

If you're concerned about draw at idle while trying to diagnose the bike for some other issue, disconnect the headlights at the headlight plugs. This is the primary high-draw item on the bike at idle, and disconnecting them should leave the bike producing a surplus of energy while running, even at idle.

Thank poet!! Didnt even think to disconnect the headlights!! wish I would have thought about that, or asked before all that crap started happening! OH well, live and learn.

Even though it varies, is there a general range that it would start to charge it up at, just for reference...or does it vary That much?

Thanks for the link as well! always good stuff!

Mine seems to be charging at idle , and gets even more voltage higher up . The old CB I'm working on doesn't even start charging till like 3k rpm's . You suspect problems I take it ?

yeah, a couple weeks back i was having major problems getting her started, especially when it started getting cold out..to make a long story short..once I got her running after not being able to get her started for several days, I let it run at an idle for about 30 minutes, occasionally rev'in the throttle, and then after about 30 minutes, it just died..seemed to running extra hot as well, and never did that before.., just stopped..i charged the batter back up,and its been fine since then..still hard to start, but thats due to plugs/carbs work that will be done on tuesday.

I didnt know that it had to run at a certain rpm, in order to charge..then when I found that out, it all made sense as to why it shut off after running on a warmer than usual day, etc.

See the webpage link I posted. It'll have values and the tests.
