  • Good vs. Bad Idea: Painting Rear Sproket

Bought a new sprocket set and chain. I am wanting to "paint" the rear sprocket or at least give it some colour. Has anyone painted theirs and if so, how long before it looks like poo? I know powder coating is the best, but no one around me does it, especially for 1 small item. Its just not cost effective. But I find the silver a little boring and want to accent my gold chain and levers.
So question is, bad idea or good idea to paint the sprocket? It would be rattle can sprayed with a primer underneath. And I will be masking off the outer perimeter of the sprocket where the chain rides to prevent chipping and wear on the paint

Probably bad idea, don't imagine it'll last long at all. Whatever you use to lube and clean your chain will probably slowly (maybe not so slowly) eat it's way through it. Plus it'll just get dirty real fast and need to be cleaned a lot to not look bad.

Might be able to find somewhere to get it anodized. Or mail it sonewhere that does powder coating. Can't be toooo expensive just to mail it.

It's been done before, just use etching primer and let the paint actually cure before you use it.

For the price of anodizing or powder coating you can buy one that color.

I think it sounds like a bad idea. The chain is going to rub a bunch of paint off. Those pai t chips are likely to get clogged up in the links. If the lube eats it up, it will get all gummy as well. Sounds like it'll be more messy than cool looking. Maybe you should just.consider buying one in the color you want instead of spray painting it. But me personally, I hate spray paint. It's too soft, scratches too easy, and just doesn't last long. If you DO paint it, it's going to degrade and you will have to repaint it probably twice a riding season.

Thanks fellas for your input. Already have the sprocket and is not refundable. So I am stuck with it. I will be masking off the teeth, so that they wont be painted. No chipping caused by the chain will happen. Seen some articles with it done and one dude has 10K miles on his painted sprocket and so far its holding up. For what its worth, why not try it? Its going black anyways...will be easy to touch up if need be

            Really not a problem.

I recommend the VHT temp paint for this though. Not because of the need for high temp, but if you bake the paint as directions suggest, the final product is very chemical resistant. So the oils and such won't bother it at all.

I did a gas cap with it, no issues so far and it's been years.
