  • Route planning tips

My buddies and I are are planning a 7-day trip from Toronto down to Bristol and back the end of July and we were looking for an easy way to plan the trip then upload the route into various GPS platforms. I have a Samsung S5 and wanted to use the phone for my GPS.

The route was originally designed using the HD ride planner but when we exported the route only general waypoints were created and the roads were missed completely.

After a bit of research I found the perfect tools (at least for my setup).

Here are the steps I used for the route planning... hope it helps someone.
    • Using a derivation of google maps create the route... the best web based site I found was Furkot . You can sign in with a gmail account. When you start you enter the start and end destination.
    • You can then drag the route to roads you want to ride. As an added bonus Furkot has a feature to display scenic roads along your route so that you can incorporate into the trip planning.
    • When you are satisfied with the route you can export the map as a GPX (or several other formats... see below)
    • The next step was to install a OsmAnd from the Google play store (I don't know if this app is available for other OS's). There are plenty of free GPS apps but this one worked the best for me.
    • OsmAnd allows you to download 10 maps along your route (in our case provinces and states). You can cheat by downloading 10 maps, move the files to your SD card, delete the app, reinstall the app and download 10 more maps, then move the other maps from your SD card to the installed directory.
    • Create a subfolder called "Tracks" in OsmAnd and save your previously created GPX files there.
    • Open OsmAnd and select Map, open menu and select "map layers", select GPX Tracks, select route. (I broke down our trip into daily routes).
    • To navigate, open the menu, select directions, and click yes for "Do you want to use displayed track for navigation"

Let me know if you have any questions.... I'll try to help.
