  • Streetfighter Question

Hey guys, I was wondering if it's possible to turn a 2002 Kat 600 into a streetfighter without any major mods? Would also love to get rid of that massive rear fender. Is that possible without purchasing anything?

Really? Buy a bike that looks better naked. To answer your question, depends on how you want it to look. If you want it to look like stripped down katana, then sure, just remove what you don't want. The only issue I see are those hideous front turn indicators.

Touche sir, I like the look of the Katana naked. The indicators are built into the fairing so that's not too bad. The rear fender I was thinking about taking the reflector off below the tail light, then moving the plate holder up and cutting the rest off.

Search "shovel chop" for ideas. You'll need to find front turn indicators when you remove the fairings. You can also search " street fighter" for gauge ideas.

There is a young Soldier riding around on a naked Kat in our area. He put Amber LED strips down the rib cage (not sure what to call the half frame the ending sub frame mounts to in front of the exhaust headers and oil cooler). He painted the "rib cage" part of the frame silver to blend with the engine. Looks good. Bike nights at Sonic his bike does look pretty cool with amber marker/turn signal LEDs.

+1 mine is and will be ugly when completed. But it'll be extremely uniquely ugly.

I am in the process of stripping my 2000 down.

Most of the fairings were broken when I bought it, and I can't bring myself to keep the bee-stinger taillight.

I am keeping most of the tail section, but I think two-tone paint (black with an accent color) will make the tail section look smaller than it is. That's a good thing.

I'll post some pics when I think it's ready for scrutiny. the katana is not an ideal fighter candidate, with all the frame-bracing and weird edges, but I think it can be improved by cutting/grinding the fairing brackets off the tank and frame. That will be the very last thing I do, in case I change my mind and want to buy fairings...

Imo, the Katana isn't a good candidate for a street fighter, all of the reason to try it. Different is good. Remember the early 2000's...fat tire choppers looked cool, then everybody copied it. They all started to look the same. Katana street fighter or even a cafe racer...its a good idea. If it's your take on a style, go for it.

Not hard to 'fighter' a kat on a budget. This was mine a few years ago before it went back under the knife for more radical surgery.

Mine is a 2000 though. The bodywork covered more of the bike, so the tank in particular has more weird lines on it.

I think I have some solutions to minimize that visual effect. 2-tone paint will make the front fender look skinnier without cutting, and black on the lower portion of the tank (i.e. the part that would have been covered by the side fairings) should make that blend into the frame better.

We'll see how it looks. The worst I can do is decide I don't like it and put it back together.

I do have my tail light and rear turn signals almost complete now. I'll see if I can get it on photobucket...

**edit - no go on the pics for now. Having an 11 week old at home kind of forces you to delete bike pics so you can have room for all the epic cuteness. To be continued.

did you paint the rearset plates, or remove part of them?

                            That looks great btw.

Post kat's fairing don't cover any more of the bike than a pre kat's fairings do.
The reason my tank looks decent without the fairings is because I modified the tank.
And the bike never had rearset plates, not as long as I have owned it.
