  • First Bike 1993 Katana 600 Oil Leak

Bought this bike sight unseen from a friend of a friend. My buddy drove it around and said it was running good. Well he gets it to my house and when it sits, it leaks oil. I took the fairings off and can't really spot where it's coming from. Also, when I put the bike in first gear, it shuts off? Does it need to "warm up" before putting it in first gear? I'm not a mechanic, but I did buy the Haynes manual for the bike. Not sure if I should try to get my money back or try to fix it. I paid $1500 for the bike and it only has 15k miles on it.

Well, your "friend" didn't do you any favors on the price but it's not the end of the world. The most likely place for the oil leak is the drain plug. Most folks go way too many oil changes without replacing the washer and then they get a little drip when the bike's parked. Try wiping off the engine so you can see exactly where the leak is coming from.

As for the bike shutting off, there's several safety switches. There's one that shuts off the bike if you try to put it in gear before folding up the sidestand. That's probably what's going on there. Just user error and not uncommon at all.

Kickstand was the issue, thanks. Also, the oil is dripping from the Left side of the bike. Not sure what the housing is, but it's round, says suzuki on it, and is in front of the clutch. The fluid leaking is definately oil.

That's the "starter cover". Not a normal place for a leak. Generally it means the bike has been dropped and the cover is cracked or else that someone has done some work on the engine and was too cheap to replace the gasket. Get in some good light and start poking around to see which it is.

It's also possible the leak is coming from farther up and that's just where it's collecting. Wipe everything down really well and then start looking for the wet spot.

(...sounds like a couple of dates I've been on!)

Vatbrew, The clutch is actually on the right side of the bike. The clutch cable pulls on a wormgear type mechanism (mounted in the sprocket cover) which converts the cable pull to a push on a rod which goes through the center of the engine to the clutch.

#18 and 19 on that diagram is where the oil is collecting

Hot damn. I think I found it already. That cover that says suzuki on it is severely damaged and has a tiny crack in it.

Take it to a welding shop or hit ebay.

$118? WTF. I hope that's an NRC cover for that price.

$104 or $96 at Boulevard, depending on which one ? Don't forget to order the gasket.
