  • Wider rear tire on a Katana 750 ? (MY2000)

    Dear KatRiders,

I am a brand new member here, so please forgive my if this question has been raised earlier.

I have owned my bike for about a year now (previously I had a Katana 600 MY1995), and its time to change my tires. My Katana (GSX750F year 2000) har a rear tire with the dimension 150/70ZR17, but I would very much like to mount a wider rear tire on it.

Do anyone have any experienses with mounting a wider rear tire on this bike ? Will 160/60ZR17 fit well ? Any significant change to the handling ?

Thanks to everyone who replys, and to all the readers aswell

    I appriciate any help.

    Best regards from

The 160 will fit, and it's about as wide as you want to go on the stock rim.
90% of motorcycle forum members do not have a service manual for their bike.

I have a 160 conti road attack on mine. no difference in handling to make a note of.
FWIW continental makes a road attack 170 that will fit out rim for the 98+ bikes.

i have a 170/60 conti motion on my 98 750. i got this because the 160/60 was backordered. i don't get to the edge. next time i'll go to 160/60. oh yeah, welcome. you'll get more responses in the introduction section.

I went with a 160/70 since it gave me, effectively, a taller gear. In combination with a 16 tooth front sprocket I have very relaxed cruising rpm's.

                  Thanks for all the tips.

Based on all the information, I think I'll go fore the 160/60 instead of 170/60.

160/70 (combined with 16 sprocket front gear) for relaxed crusing rpm's is also a good tip, but I don't think this is necessary for my driving pattern.

installation of 16 front sprocket requires slight mod of cover, just a little grinding.

i just put a 170 on my 03 600. looks a lot better. According to dennis kirk, a continental conti will fit a 4 1/2 wheel. IMO the Kat has a wide tail section. with a 150, every thing looks out a proportion. Thats just me. love the 170 !

                        Hi!

Not every tire fit the same, I ride Pilot road 2ct 160/60 ,it is a pointy tire, more a ''v'' shape then a ''u'' and the rim pinches the tire even more. There are some tire companys that offers charts to help you choose the rite tires for your bike, check out www.avon-tyres.co.uk the ''Storm 2'' is a great tire or if you are a more agressiv rider the ''VP2'' is super!

Thanky you all for all the excellent tip's.

                          It is greatly appriciated )

I have to admit that the a 170 is what i really wish fore,
just for the look, but not if a 170 "damages" the handling.
                          I'll think about it

I'd like to see the 170 if anyone has pictures.
People say that there isin't a noticable difference in appearence.I certainly can tell a difference in the 150-160 and my now 120 front tire from the 110. It doesn't seem like alot but it does look alot different. My new front tire looks like my old 150 rear tire

The 160/60 fits nicely on the 4.5 inch rim. What I found with the stock 150/70 is that I was riding right to the edge of the tread, with no chicken strip left.
My preferred brand is Michelin, having worn out a set of Pilot Road 2's, then a set of Power Pure just to give them a try, now onto Pilot Road 3's which suit the bike and the way I ride.
In the end I doubt it matters much which brand of tyre you buy, stick to matched sets front and rear, keep to sensible sizes and you'll have fun.
