  • Decided to make my own cowl, Couple questions.

    I am wondering what to use for the topcoat. I bought bondo body filler but I havent heard to much good things for laying on top of the fiberglass mold. Will it be good or should I go get something else? I seen gel coat, how good is that stuff?

    I doubt Bondo will produce what you want. Stick with fiberglass fibers and resin.

      Well I have that, Dont you have to put a topcoat on the top of it? I was going to make the mold out of fiberglass then bondo the top.

        You've got the right idea. Tape off your seat really well, add foam if you want to make it raised or a different shape, etc, and then tape off the whole bit with green masking tape, overlapping by 1/2" or so on each pass. Cover the whole thing in a thick layer of car wax (easier to find than mold release stuff, and works perfectly) and then lay down the fiberglass. Lay it thick enough that you can take an 80 grit wheel to it afterwards to smooth it down, and then use body filler over top, and sand until you get it smooth.

            K cool guys, just layed out my fiberglass, man that stuff gets sticky! lol its my first time so we will see how its goes

              I don't know how you laid it, but my favorite way is to cover a table in plastic, and then cut dry chopped mat (not woven) to the correct size/shape to cover the whole thing. Use 3-4 layers of heavy mat, and then stack them on the table, and soak them with resin. After about 5-10 minutes it will be much easier to mold it to the shape you want, and you won't have to finger f*** it so much, creating all those little fly-aways. Don't mix the resin too hot, or after the 5-10 minutes your mat will be rock hard and burning hot!

                Yeah so my resin is still wet and its not getting hard at all. WTF? I did something wrong, its been 3 hours.

                  Uh, yeah...... not enough catalyst (MEKP). If you buy resin from auto parts stores they usually give you just enough MEKP for the amount of resin. So if you use half the container of resin, empty half the tube of MEKP into it. Without enough MEKP, it will just stay liquid, or kind of jelly, but it will never harden.

                    I put another layer on it with alot of catalyst, woke up this morning and its stlil wet in some spots. Im goina scratch the whole project because its taking way to long and I do not have time to be screwing around with this. Ill just have to buy one from someone

                      if you use too much catalyst, it will stay kind of 'sticky' feeling....if you decide to give it another go, when I make them, i rough up the glass after it cures, then apply a light coat of Duraglass over it. Duraglass is a heavyweight filler that is super strong and actually has fiberglass hairs impregnated in it. I smooth that out, then use a lighter weight body filler (Icing from USC is the bomb) to finish it off before priming and the paint process.

                        I put it out in the sun and its finally starting to harden, im going to do my topcoat tonight after I sand/trim up the fiberglass. We will see how it turns out lol

                          This actual sounds like an interesting project. Would be cool to make a Buse tail so you have a single seat since most of the time I ride without a passenger! Most of the ones I see for sale seem to expensive to me.

                            after you have a strong sturdy base you can use fiberglass reinforced bondo (kitty hair) for the top layer to smoothen out any inperfections but be sure to use a 60 grit paper to sand the resin before you add the bondo.
                            use a spot putty after the bondo.
                            Let it cure a few days in the sun before you prime it for paint. used a sandable filler primer.

                              bondo on top of fiberglass is not a good idea unless i missed something than you are planning on putting bondo on the fiber glass. it will flex and the bondo will crack and chip off. unless its another bondo product. the fiber glass reinforced bondo sounds a little stronger but not strong enough.

                              or i could be wrong i have never used fiberglass reinforced bondo so.....
