  • ebay fairings

Sooo, I picked up a 2001 Katana from my brother for the good ol' family price of free, and he knocked it over a few times, so I was looking at replacing some of the fairings with some eBay ABS stuff....

I'm not very familiar when it comes some of the plastics and different years, would 2003 fairings fit an '01 bike? Or maybe some of the GSXR fairings that I've seen on there?

These isn't ALOT of damage, but enough to be annoying, and to make a girl think twice about riding with you.

    Ideas?

Im thinking about picking up a set with my tax return. Cheaper than a paint job, no buffing or worrying about crummy clear...etc.

A few people on here have gotten them, and they all seemed pretty pleased.

I did the swap, and just needed the tail light and bracket. The seat latch fit just fine on my 2001.

I see! So really I can just get one of the full ebay kits, a new tail light, and then the bracket... I just got a hayabusa bracket off some random ebay, and hope to do the swap! End of this month, if all goes well... expect pictures!

            So:

and then just a light assembly with mount bracket?

Well it took me alot longer then I thought it was going to take, plus the fact that I don't have a garage, and Oregon weather.....

I ordered the fairings, and they got here after about 30 days (I guess Chinese new year got in the way)

the box was SUPER LIGHT. these fairings are very cheaply made. I mean you can't expect much when you're paying 500 bucks for a full kit... I expected the plastic to be a little higher quality / heavier, oh well.

Anyway, the fairings all snapped/screwed on without issue, I had some small problems with a few things:

Since I'm have a 2001, and these were 2003 body parts, the front fairings didn't line up entirely with the top black plastics, where my gauges were located. no big deal.

the plastic is so cheap that the locations to screw / mount things in, had a tendency to snap off, since they weren't actually MOLDED in, and just plastic welded on... they have no support... sooo...epoxy, epoxy, epoxy.

I purchased a Hayabusa tail light and bracket off ebay as per the posting, then got a clear alternative integrated lens to replace the bulb.... Issue: 98-02 vs 2003 wiring harnesses are way different... After finding a wiring diagram online, and comparing the two, I cut both wiring harnesses, and made a new molex connector from Radio Shack, to get all the lights up and working...

Sweet! now that the lights electrically work, time to mount them them!

Hayabusa bracket worked after a little bit of hammer magic, perfect, looks great!

Now to line up the new seat.... Wait... the keyhole for the seatlock is too far away/the cable doesn't go far enough... it's like 2 inches two short... DAMN YOU SUZUKI!

Alright, so easy enough, let's just hack up a bicycle break wire, and make our own! Sweet! ok it works! it unlocks, it locks... whew.

              Time for the test ride!....

Remember what I said about the threaded mounts on the body?

The first ride I took, the weight of the taillight snapped the mounts off the side of the panels *sigh*.

Time to get a custom taillight bracket made... I put an ad on craigslist and had a guy make a custom bracket that mounted to the rear anchor on the back of the bike for the tail light, to not have any of the support on the plastic, only on the metal frame.... Took him a few days, but hey, now I have a mounted light. LOL.

              ok sweet!! FINALLY!!

After 3 months, the new fairings, and full body swap is complete. We had hiccups, and a few challenges.

Pictures along the way ended up getting stolen when my iPhone walked away...

I'll see if I can attach some "after" pictures though with the key areas...

The ebay seller that I went with was:
                    some seller named "moto-777"

*shrugs* i was skeptical, and figured only 500 bucks...
